Tradition
Traditional Chinese medicine can sound a little exotic if you aren’t familiar with some of its terms and concepts. But first and foremost TCM is about common sense grounded in a close, intuitive observation of human health over the past 5,000 years. Inspired by the ancient philosophy of Taoism, TCM provides a path to living a long life, as free as possible from disease and sustained by emotional and spiritual well-being. Its main therapeutic treatments are acupuncture, tuina massage and herbal remedies, augmented by guidance on diet and fitness. TCM’s overall goal is to promote wellness and prevent disease by striving for balance between yin and yang, the opposing forces governing all existence, as well as a free, unhindered flow of qi, the vital energy of the universe. At Xiaolan Health Centre, we work to deepen understanding of TCM by welcoming your questions and suggesting recommended reading for those interested in learning more.
The Western medical tradition is equally important at Xiaolan Health Centre. We recognize the power of modern “scientific” medicine as it pursues advances in everything from heart surgery to genetic research. And in our holistic approach we look for ways to complement Western strengths with those of the East, whether providing acupuncture to ease the discomfort of cancer treatments or supporting a course of antibiotics with traditional herbal remedies. We also embrace many Western alternative therapies, from naturopathy to chiropractic to chelation – combining the best of the best while ensuring all areas of medical practice at Xiaolan Health Centre are fully transparent and accessible. All of our practitioners share common aims: to use natural methods wherever possible, to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms, and above all to help you restore or maintain good health by achieving a harmonious balance in your life.
